The latest early childhood development (ECD) policy is dated 2016 and is now under the Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion – a welcome move – from the overwhelmed Ministry of Education. ECD policy focuses on the 0-6 year-olds and ropes in everything from health, nutrition, and child protection, to education, hence bringing in ministries of health, education, and infrastructure, the police, NGOs and private sector, among others. A quick read shows there are four intervention areas to the policy : Parenting education and support, school readiness and transition, child protection and family support, and coordination of governance and resources.
ECD is a very good program since it cares for children from the early stage in a holistic way. But having a look at our local communities, not all parents can afford to take their children through this program. We cannot also forget that there is a big number of children from very needy families and orphans adopted or being raised in vulnerable families. Light Community Transformation Center exists to find such like children so that they may also benefit from this program. The journey does not stop from here, we keep on caring very needy children and more especially for orphans from the stage where nursery stops up to secondary level, where we support them with school fees, school materials and other specific needs.
